It has been a tremendous year so far for the Hunter Wildfires, with 2021 seeing the club launch into Sydney’s premier grade rugby union competition, the Shute Shield, fielding two men’s and a woman’s side in the Jack Scott Cup.

Already strongly backed by a patriotic Newcastle the team has welcomed successes within the competition, and with the official announcement of David Campese joining ranks as Brand Ambassador, sharing his wealth of Rugby knowledge the Wildfires are now more than ever positioned for a strong finish to the 2021 season.

“Having David on board is second to none for the club, he is a household name in the Rugby community and is arguably one of the greatest players to have graced the field.”

Brett Sutherland, President of the Wildfires

David joins the Wildfires, bringing a wealth of knowledge to the club both on and off field. His position will elevate awareness of Rugby here in the Hunter and drive home the rewarding opportunity offered by the Wildfires to local players, who’ll be able to achieve their Rugby goals, here in the Hunter.

“Rugby has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a player and now a coach and ambassador of the game, I’ve learnt that giving back to the grassroots of this great game, is where I can have the most positive impact. When I was offered the opportunity to join the Hunter Juniors and Wildfires, I jumped at the chance to join a rugby region that understands the value of investing in grassroots. I look forward to mentoring both the players and coaches and developing skilful, entertaining and ultimately a winning style of rugby for the Hunter Region.”

David Campese, Brand Ambassador for the Wildfires

David’s long history within the sport and accolades from representing Australia for over 15 years to representing New South Wales for 11 years or being the first man to achieve a world record 64 tries aligned him with the ethos of the Wildfires and their development goals from grass roots in the Hunter, through to elite level.

With the support of Hunter-based developers, the McCloy Group, David will be a core representative for the Wildfires, local premier clubs, divisional clubs, support to the Junior Wildfires Representative teams and play an active role in engaging opportunities throughout local schools and across the Wildfires Indigenous programme in the Hunter and New England Regions.
